Mahashivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in reverence of Lord Shiva. It is also known as "The Great Night of Lord Shiva". The festival is celebrated on the 13th or 14th day of the Hindu month of Phalguna (February/March), and falls on a different date each year due to the differences in the Hindu lunar calendar.
The word "Mahashivratri" literally translates to "the Great Night of Lord Shiva". It is believed that on this night, Lord Shiva performed the "Tandava" dance, which is the dance of creation, preservation, and destruction.
There are several legends and beliefs associated with the celebration of Mahashivratri. According to one belief, it is said that Lord Shiva saved the world from darkness and ignorance on this day. Another belief is that it is the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.
Mahashivratri is celebrated in many different ways, but the most common way is by offering prayers and offerings to Lord Shiva at a temple or at home. Some people fast on this day, while others spend the night awake in meditation and worship. A night-long vigil is also kept in many temples, with devotional songs and hymns being sung in praise of Lord Shiva.
